about
Collaborating with labelmate Ben Cramer (Old Sea Brigade), Martin’s new single “What You Don’t Know” is about focusing in the moment and living an authentic life. “As an artist I've always lived with uncertainty. Is this any good? Do I know what I'm doing? Is anyone going to hear this or understand it? I think most people feel that way, whatever they're doing with their life. There's a magic in letting go of knowing what's going to happen next. I feel that intensely in the process of writing songs and creating new art. Often I have no idea what I'm going to do or say until I start. ‘What You Don’t Know’ is one of those songs. I wrote it with Ben Cramer (Old Sea Brigade) in Nashville, on the first day of my writing trip, the first time we met each other. This song happened very naturally, and feels quite dream-like. When life gets hard, and success seems far away, sometimes all I can do is focus on the moment, the next tiny step in creating a meaningful, authentic life. 'We'll build a house here, we'll write our own song - one note, one nail at a time'”
lyrics
A long road to wander
But a short path to the sea
The ocean inside you
Keeps calling to me
You’ve carried disappointment
Like a body on your back
Send it down the river and be free
When lightning flashes overhead
Remember what your mother said
You can’t know
What you don’t know
You’ve gotta let go
Let the day show you how
Oh you can’t know
What you don’t know
You’ve gotta let go somehow
I’ll take you with me
If you’ll come along
Tell me your secrets
I’ll hold them strong
We’ll build a house here
We’ll write our own song
One note, one nail at a time
When lightning flashes overhead
Remember what your mother said
You can’t know
What you don’t know
You’ve gotta let go
Let the day show you how
Oh you can’t know
What you don’t know
You’ve gotta let go somehow
